Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, and belongs to a group of eye diseases that damage your optic nerve, inside your eyes, potentially causing preventable blindness. It is estimated that half of more than 4 million Americans with glaucoma do not even realize they have it.

When fluid inside the eye does not drain properly, it can lead to excess pressure intraocular pressure and increase risk of getting glaucoma. Other sources of increase intraocular pressures include aqueous miss direction and or over production of aqueous fluids without adequate drainage. The elevated pressure can damage nerves and the blood vessels in the eye negatively affect vision.

Treatment of open-angle glaucoma requires lowering the eye's pressure by increasing the drainage and or production of aqueous humor. Medications both topical drops and oral pills can accomplish both of these goals. With open-angle glaucoma, there may be no obvious symptoms of this eye disease at all until the condition is very advanced and when there is significant vision loss.

Prevention of Glaucoma

Too much glucose in the blood for a long time can cause internal retinal problem. This high glycemic changes can damage many parts of the body, such as the heart, peripheral limbs, brain, eyes, and kidneys. Heart and blood vessel disease can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Thus, you can do a lot to prevent or slow down diabetes sequel and progression.

Tips to lessen glaucomas

  • Get regular yearly eye care
  • Monitor Blood Chemistry
  • Treat abnormal elevated intraocular pressure
  • Eat a healthy diet accompany by moderate exercise
  • Wear eye protection
